Due to space and budget limitations, the NFA can't accept all qualified students for courses at our Emmitsburg campus. Also, many volunteer and career fire service personnel don't have the time to attend on-campus programs.
2-day courses
2-day classroom training opportunities from the NFA are available for students who may not have the time to attend 6-day courses. Curriculum areas cover a variety of subjects, including fire and injury prevention, public education, company tactical operations, incident command, health and safety, hazardous materials, and counterterrorism.
Information about application procedures, courses, dates and locations of deliveries is available through the off-campus 2-day course schedule or by contacting your state fire training agency. Each state is responsible for all course admission procedures.
Off-campus 2-day courses are co-sponsored by the NFA and state and local fire training systems. Each year, state fire training agencies select 2-day courses for delivery within their own state. If your fire department is interested in hosting one of these course deliveries, contact your state fire training agency.
States have the option of electing to use courses as train-the-trainer (T-t-T) programs. Course materials are handed off in digital format to state training systems hosting T-t-T deliveries.

6-day courses
For the most part, off-campus 6-day courses are the same as on-campus courses. The NFA provides 2 instructors per course and all training materials.
Courses are requested through the Training Resources and Data Exchange (TRADE) network. TRADE members consist of state and local training and education administrators who are in an excellent position to determine the training needs of fire service personnel in their regions.
Local hosts select and coordinate training facilities, arrange for support, provide instructional equipment, secure student housing and meals, and provide onsite administrative support. Students are responsible for costs associated with individual travel, lodging and meals.
